  1. The Right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Arm the doctors, provide guards and protective escorts for the patients. Like Presidents, celebrities, drug dealers, convenience store clerks and the police, there are just some occupations which might lead to you getting shot at. Act accordingly.

I don't think the laws are bad or that the system is broken. Violent speech and abortion are both protected by the Supreme Court. The people who commit these acts, or step over the legal line in there vocal support, are criminals who are brought to justice and punished. As they should be.

I despise pundits, populist fear-mongering self-promoters, every single one of them. Especially on the cable news networks, which I never watch. The big scrolling banner ruined this one for me. I did appreciate that she presented evidence to support her opinion and admitted that she was making "observations as a citizen". I guess it's harmless so long as it's realized for what it is and not taken as unbiased fact based reporting. She is obviously very intelligent and well spoken, so I guess her opinion is as good as any other. I hate the big microphone and narrow view these pundits adopt, and pay them no attention.

    I take away three questions:
    1. How has the system failed?
    2. How could any of this been prevented by treating people as terrorists?
    3. If these are and have all been individual actors, doesn't treating them as terrorists only affect the punishment after the fact?

  2. I'll take my opinions from someone who's lived it:

It's sounds like once again, Bush is worse than the crazy, stupid criminals out there.

  3. Because I have nothing better to do as I sit here playing poker, here is another interesting article on the subject:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/04/AR2009060404267_2.html

"More than 88 percent of abortions are done in the first trimester, and most doctors will not perform them beyond 22 or 24 weeks because of moral qualms, social stigma, legal concerns, inadequate training or lack of experience. Barely 1 percent of procedures are done after 21 weeks. At 37 weeks, a baby is generally considered full-term.

But 2001 data from 15 states and New York City indicate that perhaps as many as 2,400 abortions were performed after 24 weeks in the United States that year, Henshaw said, most of them probably in the 25th or 26th week.

A survey of 1,819 providers found that at the time, 18 clinics and 12 hospitals performed abortions at 26 weeks. Because the overall number of abortion providers has dropped since 2001, the number offering procedures that late has probably fallen, too, and the number performing abortions even further along in the pregnancy is probably much smaller, Henshaw said."

The threat of violence is also a concern and of course mentioned in the article. The TERRORIST word count in the article is 0.

    directly quoted:
"But a 13-year-old teenybopper clutching a pink teddy bear who has been raped by her stepfather -- I'll do that."

Also highly informative: the article provides the names of at least two practitioners - LeRoy Carhart of Bellevue, Nebraska and Warren M. Hern of Boulder, Colorado. Strangely a quick google search for a listing of practicing doctors didn't turn up any direct results that I could find. I would think it important that people be able to find where to go when they need.
